Most business owners think getting a website built is a massive ordeal.

Months of back and forth. Confusing technical jargon. Endless revisions. A budget that spirals out of control. And at the end of it, you get something that looks nothing like what you asked for.

I get it. That is the experience a lot of people have had.

But it does not have to be that way.

I am Harry Lang, founder of Dab Hand Marketing, and I want to pull back the curtain on exactly how we take a business website from a vague idea in your head to a live, working, money-making machine on the internet. No mystery. No smoke and mirrors. Just a clear, proven process that we have refined over hundreds of projects.

And here is the part that surprises people most. It takes 2 to 4 weeks. Not months.

Let me walk you through every step.

Step 1: The Discovery Call

Everything starts with a conversation.

This is not a sales pitch disguised as a consultation. It is a genuine conversation where we figure out whether we are the right fit for each other and, more importantly, what your website actually needs to achieve.

Because here is the thing most web designers get wrong from the start. They ask you what you want your website to look like. That is the wrong question. The right question is: what do you need your website to do?

A website is not a digital brochure. It is a business tool. And like any tool, it needs to be designed for a specific purpose.

On the discovery call, we dig into:

  • What does your business actually do? Not the elevator pitch. The real detail. Who are your customers? What makes you different?
  • What are your goals? More leads? More sales? Building credibility? Booking appointments? We need to know what success looks like.
  • Who is your target audience? A website for a luxury builder looks and functions very differently from one for a mobile dog groomer.
  • What is working and what is not? If you have an existing site, what do you like, what do you hate, and what have your customers said about it?
  • What is your timeline and budget? No judgement. We just need the parameters.

This call takes about 30 to 45 minutes. By the end of it, we both know where we stand. If we are the right fit, we move forward. If not, I will tell you honestly and point you in the right direction.

Step 2: Strategy and Planning

This is the step that separates professionals from amateurs. And it is the step that most cheap web designers skip entirely.

Before anyone opens a design tool or writes a single line of code, we build the strategy. This is the blueprint that everything else is built on.

Site mapping. We map out every page your website needs, how they connect, and the logical flow a visitor takes from landing on your site to taking action. Based on your goals and audience, not guesswork.

Content strategy. What content does each page need? Headlines. Body copy. Calls to action. Testimonials. FAQs. We identify the gaps and plan how to fill them. A beautiful website with rubbish content is just a pretty waste of money.

SEO foundation. We research the keywords your audience is actually searching for and build them into the site structure from day one. Not bolted on as an afterthought. Baked in from the ground up.

Conversion planning. Where do the calls to action go? What does the contact form look like? How do we make it as easy as humanly possible for a visitor to become a customer?

This strategy phase takes a few days. It is worth every minute. Getting this right means the rest of the project flows smoothly. Getting it wrong means a site that looks pretty but does not perform.

Step 3: Wireframing

Once the strategy is locked in, we move to wireframing.

Think of wireframes as the architectural drawings for your website. They show the structure and layout of each page without any visual design. No colours. No images. No fonts. Just boxes and text that show where everything goes and how the page flows.

Why do we do this before design? Because it is much easier to move a box on a wireframe than to redesign a finished page. Wireframes let us nail the structure, the content hierarchy, and the user flow before we invest time in the visual design.

You will see exactly how your homepage is structured. Where the headline sits. Where the testimonials go. How the navigation works. Where the calls to action are placed. And you get to give feedback and make changes at this stage, when it is quick and painless.

Most of our clients are surprised by how much clarity wireframes provide. Suddenly the website is not some abstract concept. It is a tangible plan that you can see and understand.

We typically have wireframes ready within a few days of finalising the strategy. One round of feedback from you, a few adjustments, and we are ready to move into the fun part.

Step 4: Visual Design

This is where your website starts to come to life.

Using the wireframes as the foundation, we design the visual identity of your site. Colours. Typography. Imagery. Spacing. The overall look and feel that tells your customers exactly what your brand is about before they read a single word.

Good design is not about making things pretty. It is about making things work. Every decision is in service of the strategy. The colour of your call-to-action button is chosen because it draws the eye. The font size is optimised for readability across devices. The white space is intentional breathing room.

We design mobile-first. Always. That is how most of your customers will experience your site.

You see full design mockups of your key pages. We walk you through every decision. And you get to give feedback. We are not precious. If something is not right, we change it.

This stage takes about a week. Most clients nail it in one or two rounds of revisions. Because the strategy and wireframes are solid, there are rarely major surprises.

Step 5: Content Creation

Content is the part that trips up most web design projects.

Here is what usually happens. The designer finishes the site, sends it to the client, and says, "Right, just send us the content for each page and we will drop it in." The client stares at a blank document for three weeks, writes something mediocre in a panic, and the beautiful new website launches with content that does not do it justice.

We do it differently.

We work on content in parallel with design, not after it. By the time we reach this stage, we already know what content each page needs because we planned it during the strategy phase. We can write it for you, help you write it, or work with content you already have.

If we are writing your content, it is not generic filler. It is conversion-focused copy that speaks directly to your target audience, addresses their concerns, and guides them toward taking action. Headlines that grab attention. Body copy that builds trust. Calls to action that actually get clicked.

We also handle the imagery. Whether that means sourcing professional stock photography, working with your existing brand photos, or advising on a photoshoot, we make sure every image on your site serves a purpose and is optimised for fast loading.

Content and design need to work together. When you separate them into different phases handled by different people, you end up with a disconnect. Our approach ensures everything is cohesive from the start.

Step 6: Development

This is where the design becomes a real, functioning website.

Our development process is where we genuinely separate ourselves from the pack. While most agencies are still building on bloated platforms that load slowly and need constant babysitting, we build on modern architecture that delivers blazingly fast performance out of the box.

What does that mean in practice?

  • Sub-one-second load times. Not a marketing claim. A measurable, testable reality. Our sites consistently score 95 or above on Google's performance metrics.
  • Mobile-first responsiveness. The site works flawlessly on every device and screen size. Not "pretty good on mobile." Flawless.
  • SEO built into the code. Clean, semantic code that search engines love. Proper heading structure. Optimised meta data. Fast page speeds. All the technical SEO fundamentals handled from the start.
  • Security. No bloated plugins with known vulnerabilities. No outdated frameworks that get hacked every other week. A clean, modern codebase that is inherently more secure.

Development typically takes one to two weeks depending on the size and complexity of the site. During this phase, we are building every page, integrating your content, setting up forms and analytics, connecting any third-party tools you need, and making sure everything works exactly as designed.

Step 7: Testing and Quality Assurance

Before anyone outside our team sees your website, it goes through a thorough testing process.

We test on multiple browsers. Multiple devices. Different screen sizes. Every form. Every link. The mobile navigation. The accessibility. The loading speed.

We are looking for anything that is not perfect. A misaligned button. A font rendering issue. An image loading a fraction too slowly. A form that does not send correctly.

We find the problems so your customers do not have to.

We also run everything through Google PageSpeed Insights, Lighthouse, and our own benchmarks. If a page scores below 95 on mobile, we optimise until it does.

This takes two to three days. Not glamorous, but it is the difference between a smooth launch and an embarrassing one.

Step 8: Your Review

Once we are satisfied the site is ready, you get to see it.

We set up the site on a staging environment, which is basically a private preview that only you can access. You get to click through every page, read every word, test every form, and view it on your own devices.

We walk you through the site on a call, explaining how everything works and pointing out the strategic decisions behind the design. Then you take your time to review it thoroughly.

We ask for consolidated feedback in one round. Not because we are lazy, but because scattered feedback over multiple rounds leads to confusion and delays. One clear, comprehensive round of revisions keeps the project on track and on budget.

Most clients have minor tweaks at this stage. A word changed here, an image swapped there. Occasionally something more substantial, which is fine. We would rather get it right than rush it out the door.

Step 9: Launch

Launch day.

This is the part where your new website goes live and the old one becomes a memory.

We handle the lot. Domain configuration. SSL certificates. DNS settings. Redirects from old URLs so you do not lose SEO value. Analytics. Search console. Everything.

We monitor the launch in real time. All pages loading. Forms sending. Tracking working. No issues.

Once everything is running perfectly, your new website is live. Your customers are experiencing something genuinely world-class.

The entire process, from discovery call to launch day, typically takes 2 to 4 weeks. Not months. Not "sometime this quarter." Weeks.

That surprises people. But it is possible because our process is refined. Strategy right up front means no endless revisions. Content in parallel means no waiting. Modern tech means no fighting with bloated platforms.

Step 10: After Launch (The Part Everyone Else Forgets)

Here is a dirty little secret about the web design industry.

Most agencies build your site, hand you the keys, and wave goodbye. If something breaks, you are on your own. If you need updates, you are either paying through the nose for ad-hoc changes or trying to figure it out yourself.

We think that is a rubbish way to do business.

At Dab Hand Marketing, the relationship does not end at launch. It starts there.

Ongoing support and maintenance. Websites are not set-and-forget. Regular updates, security monitoring, performance optimisation, content refreshes. We keep your site running at peak performance month after month.

Analytics and reporting. We monitor the data. Traffic, sources, user behaviour, conversions. We use it to make informed recommendations for improvement.

Continuous improvement. Your business evolves. Your website evolves with it. New services? Added. New testimonials? Featured. Seasonal promotions? Built in. Your website is a living asset.

SEO growth. The technical foundation is just the beginning. Content strategy, blog posts, local SEO, ongoing optimisation. We keep you climbing.

This ongoing relationship is where the real value lies. A website that is actively maintained will outperform a static one every single time.

Why Most Web Design Projects Go Wrong

Now that you have seen how the process should work, let me explain why so many go sideways.

  • No strategy. The designer jumps straight into making things look pretty without understanding the business or the goals. Pretty site that does not convert.
  • No process. Everything is ad-hoc. Scope creeps. Timelines blow out. Everyone gets frustrated.
  • Content as an afterthought. The site is designed with placeholder text, then the client is expected to produce content that fits a layout never designed for their actual words.
  • Built on the wrong platform. A bloated template system because it is cheaper for the designer. The client ends up with a slow site that needs rebuilding in two years.
  • No relationship after launch. Site goes live, invoice gets paid, everyone moves on. The site slowly deteriorates.

Every single one of these problems is avoidable. Our process is specifically designed to avoid all of them.

What You Walk Away With

  • A blazingly fast website that loads in under one second and scores 95 or above on Google's performance metrics
  • A mobile-first design that works perfectly on every device
  • Conversion-focused copy that drives action
  • SEO baked in from the ground up
  • Analytics and tracking from day one
  • A content management system for simple updates
  • Ongoing support from a team that knows your site inside and out
  • A website you are genuinely proud to send people to

That last point matters more than most people realise. How many times have you hesitated to share your website because you knew it was not great? That ends when you work with us.

The Investment

Every project is different. A five-page site for a local service business is a different scope from a fifty-page ecommerce store. So I am not going to quote specific numbers here.

What I will say is this. A professionally built website is not the cheapest option. It is the best value option.

The businesses that try to save money with a cheap template or a DIY builder almost always spend more in the long run. Slow site that does not convert. Plugins and add-ons to bolt on functionality that should have been built in. A redesign two years later. And the hidden cost of all the customers they lost along the way.

Our clients get a website that performs from day one and continues to perform for years. When you factor in the leads, the conversions, and the time saved, it is not even close.
